The smelter is a building used to smelt ore such as Iron Ore into ingots such as Iron Ingot.[1] Required ore and yields are currently unknown.

The smelter has an output of 30 ingots per minute without overclocking. Without overclocking, a miner can feed 2 smelters at full efficiency.
Speculation
Alternate smelters seen in the E3 trailer.
The trailer shows a machine with a different appearance to the smelter shown on the website, which is performing the described function of the smelter, indicating that there may be more than one type, or that the design has been changed.
